 Bharatiya Janata Party, which was contesting Legislative Council elections for teachers' constituencies for the first time, won three out of four seats it contested on Friday. Out of six teachers' constituencies, Samajwadi Party won one and two seats went to Independents.

Counting of votes for five MLC graduate constituencies was going on at the time this report was filed. Results of these seats are expected by Saturday morning.

After winning the Bareilly-Moradabad division teachers’ seat by nearly a margin of 8,000 votes on Thursday, BJP candidates registered victories in Lucknow and Meerut divisions as well on Friday. Its candidate lost in the Agra division to an Independent. SP candidate emerged victorious in Varanasi while another Independent candidate won in Gorakhpur-Faizabad division.

In Lucknow division, the sitting MLC for the teachers’ constituency Umesh Dwivedi, who was contesting as a BJP candidate, won the second term with a margin of 3247 votes against his closest competitor Mahendra Nath Rai, an independent candidate. Dwivedi received a total 7,065 votes out of total 17,077 valid votes. In 2014, Dwivedi won the seat as an independent candidate.

On Bareilly-Moradabad teacher seat, Hari Singh Dhillon won with 12,827 votes on Thursday night. He defeated his nearest candidate Sanjay Mishra of Samajwadi Party by 7,960 votes. Mishra received only 4,864 votes. Total 36,703 voters were registered for this teachers' constituency However, BJP candidate Dinesh Chandra Vashisht lost to independent candidate Akash Agarwal in Agra. Akash received 6,690 votes, while BJP candidate managed 4,319 votes only.

In Gorakhpur-Faizabad, independent candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi who is sitting MLC for past two terms, won the election with 10,227 votes. He is a member of UP secondary education union. He defeated his nearest competitor Ajay Singh with a margin of 1,008 votes. In Varanasi teachers' constituency, SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav received 7766 votes, while his nearest competitor, independent Pramod Kumar Mishra, managed to obtain 6,830 votes.

According to the Election Commission, a total of 85 candidates were contesting teachers’ constituency elections in six division which had 2,06,335 registered voters. In graduate constituencies, Lucknow's sitting MLC Kanti Singh (58), whose family has been dominating the seat for the past 18 years, was leading against BJP's Awanish Kumar Singh by over 600 votes.

Additional chief election commissioner, Yogeshwar Ram Mishra, said, “The counting of votes will continue on Saturday.”
